TRAIN SMART: The Boilermaker, More Than a Race

Why The Boilermaker Feels Like Family

By Lisa Briggs

Summer in the Mohawk Valley means early morning runs, packed sidewalks along the Parkway, sneakers drying by the door, and the countdown to Boilermaker weekend officially beginning.

At Fit Body Boot Camp in Clinton and Whitesboro, this time of year always brings a different kind of energy. Some members are training for the 15K. Others are signing up for their very first 5K. Some are running with spouses, coworkers, siblings, or friends. And honestly, that’s what makes the Boilermaker so special around here.

It’s not just a race. It’s a community event people train for together.

One of my favorite things every summer is watching people realize they are capable of more than they thought. Someone who started walking on a treadmill in March is suddenly finishing a 5K in July. Someone who never considered themselves “a runner” is confidently showing up for training runs every week.

That transformation has very little to do with perfection and everything to do with consistency.

YOU DON’T HAVE TO TRAIN HARDER. YOU HAVE TO TRAIN SMARTER.

A lot of people think preparing for a race only means running more miles. But strength training, mobility, recovery, hydration, and fueling properly are just as important.

At Fit Body Boot Camp, we focus heavily on functional strength because stronger legs, stronger glutes, and a stronger core help support your body through every mile. Strength training improves endurance, helps protect joints, and reduces the chance of injuries that can derail training altogether.

The people who feel strongest on race day usually are not the people doing the most. They’re the people who stayed consistent, recovered properly, and listened to their bodies along the way.

MY TOP TIPS BEFORE RACE DAY

  • Strength train weekly to build endurance and help prevent injuries
    • Warm up before runs and stretch afterward
    • Hydrate consistently all week, not just on race day
    • Wear proper running shoes and replace them when needed
    • Fuel your body with protein, healthy carbs, and electrolytes
    • Recovery days and mobility work are part of training too

THE BEST PART IS THE PEOPLE BESIDE YOU

The Boilermaker has a way of bringing people together.

Training partners become accountability partners. Weekend runs turn into coffee afterward. Group texts fill up with race-day outfit ideas, playlist recommendations, and reminders to hydrate.

And when race weekend finally arrives, there’s something emotional about seeing familiar faces throughout the course. People cheering from front lawns. Families lining the streets. Complete strangers encouraging runners they’ve never met before.

That’s the Mohawk Valley.

It’s community in the purest form.

RECOVERY IS PART OF TRAINING TOO

One of the biggest mistakes people make during Boilermaker season is forgetting that recovery matters just as much as the workouts themselves.

Your body needs time to recover after training runs. Tight hips, sore calves, and exhausted legs are your body asking for attention, not something to simply push through.

That’s why I always encourage stretching, mobility work, yoga, hydration, and proper rest throughout the training season. Recovery helps you feel stronger on race day and healthier afterward too.

And after all the miles, alarms, sweat, and training runs, crossing that finish line feels incredibly rewarding. Not because of the number on the clock. Because of what it took to get there.

NOW IT’S TIME TO RECOVER RIGHT AFTER THE RACE

  • Rehydrate immediately after crossing the finish line
    • Stretch tight hips, calves, hamstrings, and lower back
    • Refuel with protein and carbs to help muscles recover
    • Ice sore areas if your body needs it
    • Rest and give your body time to recover
    • Soak in the accomplishment and enjoy the rest of your summer

Whether you’re running the 5K, tackling the 15K, or simply showing up to support someone you love, the Boilermaker represents something bigger than fitness. It’s about showing up for yourself. And around here, nobody does that alone.
