The Walk In Closet

By Kaila Champoux

To some, sharing a closet with your sister might seem like an ordeal, but for sisters and Boonville natives Ashley Andre and Nicole Mills, it’s a dream come true. Together, they own The Walk In Closet, where their welcoming nature and passion for thrifting makes shopping fun and accessible.

Ashley and Nicole were no strangers to The Walk In Closet when they took over the 17-year-old business in August 2025. They fondly recall years of exploring the racks here with their mother, even when sporting secondhand items wasn’t widely embraced. Today, they are happy to see that stigma dissipating as they pass the joy of thrifting on to the next generation.

This shop truly has something for everyone. The women’s space bursts with color and selection, with everyday tops, bottoms, skirts, and dresses in all sizes. The high-heeled shoes, accessories, designer handbags (currently trending), and beachwear will leave you breathless, and that’s before venturing into the household decor section.

“You can own a high-end handbag without the upfront cost – and it’s like new!” – Ashley

For a personalized experience, these upbeat owners are ready to help style an outfit that makes you feel your best, promoting body positivity throughout the experience.

In April 2026, the sisters expanded into a new space, becoming one of the few places locally to accept men’s clothing and outdoor items on consignment. This space is uniquely Upstate NY: rustic with an Adirondack scene of evergreen trees that have lures imitating “ornaments”, for sale. Upon entering, you’re greeted by Ron, a studly outdoorsy-type. He’s a mannequin, but he makes a strong first impression. Antique ladders serve as displays and other cool surprises are awaiting your visit. Browse racks of graphic tees, shorts, jeans, and flannels, or take a gander at fishing, camping, hiking, and hunting gear ready to get nature lovers exploring the Mohawk Valley.

Both shops carry formalwear, from prom and Mother-of-the-Bride dresses to men’s button-up shirts and ties.

Shoppers will find major steals in the rotating clearance section, full of items nearing the end of their 60-day consignment period. Consignors earn 40% of the proceeds for any item sold.

“There’s nothing worse than a last-minute formal event with nothing to wear. That’s why we offer all-occasion clothing at a fraction of the price.” – Nicole

The Mohawk Valley has been integral to Nicole and Ashley’s business, that’s why consigners can opt to have unsold items donated to local non-profits. They said, “We wouldn’t be what we are without the people supporting us.”

They give back by showcasing local makers, from handcrafted cards to blind-dates with a book, often offering higher consignment rates for handmade products. In summer and fall, local treats, like donuts from the Forestport Diner, and coffee from Bonnies Country Store keep shoppers happy and caffeinated.

Shoppers here will enjoy supporting the community and sustainable practices, and likely leave with their arms full and a spring in their step!
