Helping You Stay in the Game

Helping people of all ages move comfortably and keep doing what they love.

When joint pain or an injury starts changing how you live, even simple routines can become difficult. Walking the dog, climbing stairs or spending time with grandchildren may take more effort than they once did. At CNY Orthopedics, Dr. M. Asad Khalid helps patients explore their options for easing pain, improving movement and getting back to the things they enjoy.

A board-certified, fellowship-trained orthopedic and sports medicine surgeon, Dr. Khalid serves as team physician for the Utica Comets, SUNY Morrisville, Syracuse FC and local high schools, including Oneida and Camden. His practice also welcomes people whose goals have little to do with competition and everything to do with enjoying daily life.

Experience Beyond the Playing Field

Dr. Khalid grew up playing basketball and baseball in Houston and continues to play basketball today. His medical training included an orthopedic surgery residency at the University of Texas Medical Branch at Galveston and a sports medicine fellowship at the Ochsner Clinic in New Orleans. During his fellowship, he was involved in the care of athletes with the New Orleans Saints, New Orleans Pelicans and University of New Orleans.

At CNY Orthopedics, his philosophy is to treat patients as he would his own family and to give athletes at every level the same attention he brings to professional sports. Understanding what each person hopes to do again helps guide that care, whether it is returning to a team, gardening or keeping up with grandchildren.

A Shared Vision for Regional Care

Dr. Khalid’s decision to join Dr. Nicholas Qandah’s team at CNY Brain & Spine brought together complementary expertise and a shared commitment to personalized patient care. Together, they have developed a subspecialty neuromusculoskeletal program serving greater Central New York, uniting orthopedics, sports medicine, neurosurgery, spine care and pain management in a coordinated approach centered on each patient.

Proposed quote for Dr. Khalid’s approval:

“Joining Dr. Qandah’s team has given us the opportunity to build something meaningful for our region,” says Dr. Khalid. “Our synergistic approach brings different areas of expertise together around one common goal: understanding the whole patient. By combining our strengths, we can develop a personalized care plan that reflects each person’s needs, priorities and goals, whether that means returning to sports, getting back to work or enjoying everyday life.”

Relieving Pain, Restoring Movement

Pain can gradually change a person’s routine. A walk becomes shorter. Stairs become more difficult. A favorite activity gets put aside. Addressing those concerns is an important part of orthopedic care, including for older adults who want to maintain their mobility.

Dr. Khalid emphasizes exploring nonsurgical treatments whenever possible. Depending on the condition, options at CNY Orthopedics include physical therapy, medication, bracing and injections. The practice treats a range of concerns, including arthritis, rotator cuff tears, knee injuries and other joint and tendon problems.

CNY Orthopedics also offers platelet-rich plasma, or PRP, injections as part of the growing field of regenerative medicine. Using concentrated platelets and growth factors from a patient’s own blood, PRP is designed to support the body’s healing response. It adds to the practice’s range of nonsurgical treatments, giving appropriate patients another option for addressing certain joint and tendon conditions.

When surgery is appropriate, the practice’s services include arthroscopy, ligament and tendon repair, cartilage restoration and joint replacement. Having both surgical and nonsurgical options allows patients to discuss different approaches to their care.

An Experienced Team, Close to Home

That collaborative philosophy extends throughout Dr. Khalid’s orthopedic team, which brings together expertise in orthopedic surgery, sports medicine, athletic training and nursing. Working alongside him are Dr. Ken Ortega, Dr. Gorav Simlote, Tara Baier, PA-C, ATC, Jessica Khalid, FNP, and Tim Gilliam, PA-C. With orthopedic offices in New Hartford, Oneida and Rome, patients can access this expertise close to home, supported by the broader CNY Brain & Spine team.

The practice’s message, “Get Back to What Moves You,” means something different to each person who comes through the door. It may be another season on the field or a round of golf with friends. It may be shopping independently or enjoying a walk with family. Each is a reason to seek care, and each deserves attention.
