This summer marks a remarkable milestone for one of the Mohawk Valley’s most beloved musical traditions. Michael J. DiMeo is celebrating his 50th consecutive year as director of the New Hartford Citizens’ Band, a legacy that has helped shape generations of musicians and brought live music to thousands throughout the community.
Founded in 1913, the New Hartford Citizens’ Band has long been a summer staple, drawing audiences to the Village Green for free weekly concerts. Under DiMeo’s leadership since 1976, the band has grown into an ensemble of approximately 80 musicians ranging in age from 11 to over 90. Their performances span everything from Broadway favorites and patriotic marches to jazz, classical works, and popular hits.
A lifelong musician, educator, and conductor, DiMeo spent three decades inspiring students as a music educator, including many years as band director at New Hartford Senior High School. He continues to perform and conduct throughout the region and was recognized as a 2025 Oneida County Living Legend.
Yet those who know him best point not to the accolades, but to his passion for sharing music with others.
“Top-notch musicians, each and every one of them,” says DiMeo. “We’re all here because we all love to play. I’m so grateful to share that with the band and with the broader community. And to do that for fifty years and counting? It’s very, very special.”
That spirit has been at the heart of the New Hartford Citizens’ Band for five decades, helping make live music accessible to audiences of all ages.

New Bull Reef Habitat Opens at the Utica Zoo
The Utica Zoo is making a splash with the opening of its newest attraction, the Bull Reef Habitat, a stunning indoor exhibit that is now the second-largest coral reef exhibit in the Northeast.
Located in the former Wildlife Hall auditorium, the year-round exhibit features 2,000 gallons of saltwater, vibrant coral formations, and a colorful collection of tropical fish, offering visitors an immersive look into one of the world’s most fascinating ecosystems.
Made possible through the generosity of the Bruce and Frances Bull Family Fund at the Community Foundation of Herkimer and Oneida Counties, the exhibit celebrates the passion and expertise of Dr. Ronny Bull, a nationally recognized coral reef aquaculture specialist whose lifelong fascination with saltwater ecosystems began as a child caring for fish tanks in his bedroom.
Today, visitors can experience a thriving coral reef environment while learning about the delicate balance required to sustain these remarkable underwater habitats. The exhibit not only showcases the beauty of coral reefs but also highlights the importance of conservation, education, and responsible stewardship of marine ecosystems.
Open year-round, the Bull Reef Habitat brings a unique educational experience to the Mohawk Valley and adds an exciting new dimension to the Utica Zoo’s mission of connecting people with the natural world.
