Power Up the School Year with STEM Discovery at the NY Energy Zone
As another school year begins, curiosity is back in the classroom. Questions are being asked, discoveries are waiting to be made, and students are beginning to imagine what their futures might hold. At the New York Power Authority’s NY Energy Zone in Utica, learning comes to life through hands-on experiences that make science, technology, engineering and math (STEM) engaging and memorable.
The NY Energy Zone is New York State’s first and only learning center dedicated to electricity. Visitors can watch a 3D theater presentation, and experience more than 40 interactive science exhibits including building a micro grid,
designing solar and wind installations, exploring the electric grid and even step into the role of a control room operator. Interactive exhibits connect the history of electricity with the technology shaping its future while offering a behind-the-scenes look at the important work of NYPA’s Frederick R. Clark Energy Control Center in Marcy. Best of all, admission to NY Energy Zone is free.
Designed with education in mind, the facility also features a dedicated STEM learning space for school programs, youth organizations and community groups. Whether a field trip sparks an interest in engineering or a family visit inspires a new way of thinking about energy, each experience encourages visitors to explore, ask questions and see how electricity powers everyday life.
Families can continue that learning exploration at the Wildlife Festival on Saturday, September 12, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the NY Energy Zone and Utica Zoo, 35 Utica Zoo Way. The event offers another opportunity for visitors young and old to connect science, nature and discovery through a day of hands-on exploration. The event offers FREE admission to the Utica Zoo, courtesy of NYPA. Admission to the Energy Zone is always FREE and shuttle service will be available from the Parkway Recreation Center and MVCC for the event.
As students head back to school this fall, the NY Energy Zone offers a place to experience STEM in a way that feels active, approachable and fun. It is where curiosity can lead to understanding and where the next generation of innovators can begin to see what is possible.
