September has always felt like a beginning.
Even as the calendar hints at summer’s end, September arrives with fresh notebooks, familiar routines, and the quiet excitement of starting something new. It’s a season of harvest, but it’s also a season of possibility.
This month, our cover celebrates some of the growers and producers who nourish the Mohawk Valley. Their work reminds us that growth doesn’t happen overnight. It takes patience, care, resilience, and faith in what’s to come. Those same qualities seem to find their way into every corner of life this time of year.
Back-to-school season always makes me nostalgic. I still remember laying out first-day outfits, packing lunches, snapping those annual photos on the front steps, and walking Luke and Lila to their elementary school before making the drive into the city for work. I don’t miss the commute, but I miss those moments that felt so ordinary at the time and now mean everything. It’s funny how the days can feel so long while the years pass in the blink of an eye.
Today, the little hands I once held on the walk to school belong to confident young adults finding their own paths. Luke is beginning his first year of medical school, and Lila is entering the final year of her master’s program in occupational therapy. This time next year, she’ll be caring for people right here in the community that helped shape her. Watching them grow has been the greatest privilege of my life, and it reminds me that every season prepares us for the next one.
As I look around the Mohawk Valley, I see that same story unfolding everywhere. It’s in the farmers harvesting the fruits of months of hard work. It’s in the artists preparing for a new season of performances, exhibitions, and creativity. It’s in local shops welcoming the change of season with fresh style and inspiration. It’s around our tables as Mediterranean flavors remind us that food has a remarkable way of bringing people together, no matter where we call home.
Growth looks different for each of us. Sometimes it’s measured in acres planted or businesses built. Sometimes it’s found in classrooms, studios, kitchens, or the quiet realization that the children who once needed us every step of the way are ready to make their own mark on the world.
