As the owner of Worthy, the trusted luxury resale boutique here in the Mohawk Valley, I spend a lot of time thinking about the pieces that can change an entire outfit without sending you on a full wardrobe overhaul. This fall, it really comes down to three letters: A-B-C.
A is for Accessories. They’re the whole point! A great bag, a statement belt, a bold shoe, a piece of jewelry you can’t stop touching. These are the fastest way to bring in color and personality without buying a single new piece of clothing.
B is for Blazers. Powerful, polished, and endlessly versatile, the blazer is the hardest working piece in your closet. It sharpens up your favorite jeans, adds structure to a soft dress, and instantly elevates the simplest outfit.
C is for Coats. Fall is a layering season, and your coat is the final touch. Tailored wool, cozy statement jackets, whatever you choose, it’s the first thing people see.
Let’s Talk Blazers
It can feel intimidating standing in front of a rack of them. It shouldn’t. Here’s how I break it down for my guests:
Find your silhouette
The classic tailored blazer never goes out of style. Clean lines, a bit of structure, a fit that skims rather than squeezes.
Then there’s the oversized blazer, which is where things loosen up. Thrown over a plain tee, jeans, and sneakers or loafers, it gives you that effortless “I just grabbed this” look that’s actually pretty hard to fake.
Want something with more shape? A double breasted or belted blazer gives you a defined waistline and a little drama.
Focus on fit, not the size tag
Start with the shoulders. They should sit cleanly, without pulling or collapsing, and you should be able to move your arms and layer underneath comfortably.
Pro tip: don’t get hung up on the number on the tag. How it fits and how it makes you feel matters more!
Layer it like you mean it
Throw it over a white tee and jeans for everyday polish. Layer it over a silk cami and trousers for a night out.
One of my favorite combinations? A blazer over a dress. It adds structure to something soft and instantly feels like a whole new outfit.
