Museums, Music, Theater and Creativity Across the Mohawk Valley
There is something about fall that makes us want to wander. Cooler air, changing leaves and shorter days invite us to slow down and spend an afternoon exploring. While summer belongs to outdoor festivals and concerts on the lawn, autumn draws us toward the museums, galleries, theaters and performance halls that help tell the story of the Mohawk Valley.
Across the region, new exhibitions, concerts, theater productions and special programs offer plenty of reasons to get out and explore. From major cultural institutions to smaller galleries and performance spaces, fall is a wonderful time to discover just how much creativity is close to home.
Where Every Visit Can Be Different
Few places bring together as many art forms under one roof as Munson in Utica. A visit might begin in the galleries, continue with a concert and end with an independent film or a live broadcast from the Metropolitan Opera.
This fall brings a final opportunity to experience Watercolor Stories: Art of Charles E. Burchfield, along with the annual Pratt Munson Faculty Show. Keyboard Conversations® returns with performances that combine music and storytelling, while The Met: Live in HD brings Metropolitan Opera productions to Utica.
October welcomes a new Pratt Munson Gallery exhibition featuring Patrick Brennan, Linda Sormin and Stephanie McMahon, followed by Munson After Dark for Halloween. With exhibitions, music, film and special programs filling the calendar, there is always another reason to return.
A Fall Tradition in Cooperstown
Autumn seems especially at home in Cooperstown, where Fenimore Art Museum and Fenimore Farm offer two very different ways to spend a fall day.
At Fenimore Art Museum, visitors have one last chance to see The Linda McCartney Retrospective: From the Light before it closes in early September. The museum’s collections span American folk and fine art, photography and American Indian art, while changing exhibitions offer something new with each visit. In October, Art in the Dark invites guests to explore the galleries by lantern and ultraviolet light.
Across the road, Fenimore Farm celebrates New York’s agricultural heritage through hands-on history and seasonal traditions. Harvest Festival, Blacksmith Weekend and Tractor Fest bring demonstrations, music, crafts and family activities to the grounds. As Halloween approaches, Things That Go Bump in the Night leads visitors through the village by lantern light for an evening of ghost stories, folklore and local legends.
Together, the museum and farm make Cooperstown an easy destination for a full day of art, history and fall tradition.
Looking Through a Different Lens
At Hamilton College, the Wellin Museum of Art opens the exhibition Storytelling: Photographers Making Meaning | Works from the Wellin Museum’s Collection, exploring how photographers use images, sequencing, text, and presentation to create narrative.
Drawn from the museum’s collection, the exhibition includes work by Eve Arnold, Rhona Bitner, Danny Lyon, Mike Mandel, Wright Morris, Bill Owens, Gordon Parks, Milton Rogovin, Keisha Scarville, Lorna Simpson, and Garry Winogrand.
The Wellin Museum of Art is free and open to the public. Nearby, Wellin Hall brings another dimension to a fall visit with Hamilton College’s Performing Arts Series. This season includes Ruckus: The Scottish Corelli, featuring Keir GoGwilt, the New York Classical Players and Seraph Brass. Together, the museum and performance hall make Clinton a destination for both visual art and live music this fall.
Art Across the Valley
The region’s creative energy extends well beyond its largest institutions. View Arts Center in Old Forge brings together watercolor, printmaking and plein air work, while the Arkell Museum in Canajoharie explores both American art and regional history.
Closer to home, the Rome Art and Community Center, Mohawk Valley Center for the Arts, Sculpture Space, The Other Side Gallery and Kirkland Art Center continue to support artists through exhibitions, classes and special programs. Cooperstown Art Association and Earlville Opera House add even more opportunities to see new work and connect with artists throughout the fall.
Together, these museums, galleries and arts organizations help make creativity part of everyday life across the Mohawk Valley.
Curtain Up
Fall also marks the return of live performance. Broadway Utica opens its season at the Stanley Theatre with the Tony Award-winning musical The Wiz, while Hamilton College’s Performing Arts Series brings music to Wellin Hall. Ilion Little Theatre, Players of Utica, Earlville Opera House and other regional organizations round out the season with theater, concerts and community productions.
There is something special about experiencing a performance together, when the lights dim and an audience settles in to share the same story.
A Season of Discovery
One of the joys of living in the Mohawk Valley is knowing there is always something more to discover. A new exhibition, a concert, a play or a gallery you’ve driven past but never stepped inside.
Fall offers a perfect reason to explore. Take the scenic route. Spend an afternoon in a museum. Listen to live music. Visit a gallery or support a community theater.
Some of the season’s most memorable moments may happen beneath colorful trees. Others are waiting inside the museums, theaters, galleries and historic places that continue to share the stories and creativity of the Mohawk Valley.
